Choosing the perfect engagement session location can feel a little overwhelming—especially when there are so many beautiful options. If you’re feeling stuck or unsure where to start, these five questions will help you narrow it down and choose a spot that feels meaningful and true to you.
Many of the examples below are Pittsburgh-based since that’s where I’m located, but these questions work no matter where you live.
#1 – Where Do You Live?
Unless you’re planning a destination engagement session, starting close to home makes the most sense. If you’re drawing a total blank, ask your photographer for suggestions—most of us keep curated location lists ready to go.
Here in Western Pennsylvania, I keep location ideas for Pittsburgh and surrounding areas like Wexford, Cranberry, Butler, and even further out toward Erie and the Laurel Highlands. Chances are, there’s a hidden gem right near you that you haven’t even thought about yet.
#2 – Where Did You Meet?
This one is always special. Pittsburgh has no shortage of meaningful places—universities, neighborhoods, coffee shops, trails, and favorite hangout spots.
Many couples met while attending school (or working!) in the city, and going back to where your story began adds a layer of nostalgia and connection to your photos. And it doesn’t have to be a “picture-perfect” place—sometimes the most unexpected locations hold the most meaning.
#3 – Where Did They Propose?
If your proposal location was intentional or sentimental, it can make a beautiful engagement session backdrop. Pittsburgh has plenty of popular proposal spots, but even quiet, tucked-away places can be incredibly meaningful.
Another fun option? A surprise proposal during the engagement session. It’s a two-for-one moment—raw emotion, real reactions, and photos you’ll treasure forever.
#4 – Where Is Your Wedding Venue?
This is one of my favorite options. Having your engagement session at (or near) your wedding venue allows you to start imagining the day together.
Walking the grounds, talking through your plans, and even recreating moments on your wedding day makes everything feel full-circle. Plus, it helps you feel more comfortable in the space before the big day arrives.
#5 – What Is Your Style?
This question matters more than most people realize.
If you’re laid-back, outdoorsy, or leaning toward a more rustic wedding vibe, a gritty downtown parking garage might not feel like you. Instead, you may love fields, trails, gardens, or quiet natural spaces outside the city.
On the flip side, if you’re modern, stylish, and love the energy of the city, Pittsburgh’s urban textures, architecture, and skyline could be the perfect fit.
Your engagement session should feel like an extension of who you are—not just a pretty backdrop.
